A Crush

I have a crush.

It's on the color orange.

Over the last few months, I've noticed my tendency to linger over photographs of interiors with orange accents.

At first it was a subtle thing, almost as if I wasn't really sure why I liked the space.

But over time, it became obvious what was drawing me.  Then it became a bit more serious . . .

I started musing as to where I could include some orange in our house.

Then,  I started searching for the perfect orange fabric - namely velvet.

It had the be the perfect shade of orange at the perfect price.

And, last week, I found it!

I order two yards of this very delicious burnt orange velvet.

I plan to incorporate its yumminess into our master bedroom.  As soon as it's complete, I will do a big reveal!
I hope you have a wonderful Monday.  My advice - hit the ground running today.  Before you know it, Friday will be knocking on your door! M.

Seven Favorite Kitchen Features

If you have read my blog for any length of time, you know that I would LOVE to paint my kitchen cabinetry and make some other minor changes in there.  But, my husband (like most men I know) loves to save money the natural maple wood look (sad face here).  So, we continue to live with the current state of affairs.

But, recently, I decided to focus on the things I do love about my kitchen.  And realized, there are quite a few!  Also, many of the things I love are not expensive items; rather, they're easy (weekend project) fixes that could truly change how you function in your kitchen.

First, here are a few pictures of our current kitchen.

My kitchen is unusual in that there are no windows in the space.  It's really in the center of our home and is open to our den/family room on one side, our dining on the other and our breakfast on yet another.  The wall of cabinets is my only wall in the space.

Here is a view looking into our breakfast room.

Here is a view looking into our family room (on the right where Lottie is hanging out) and our dining room (straight ahead).  BTW, our dog thinks I'm totally crazy snapping pictures of the kitchen.

OK, so here's my list of things to be grateful for in my current kitchen.

Counter tops

A couple of years ago, we changed out our solid surface white (dingy white) counter tops for honed absolute granite.  I have loved having them in our kitchen.  They have the look of slate without the maintenance.  I actually increased the size of the island, so we had to add the extra support to the right side (notice I have NOT stained it to match the rest of the maple wood - I girl can hope).  I cook a ton in this kitchen, and they're very durable.  They do not show stains or scratches at all.  Really, could not be happier with them.

Garbage Pull Out
This was a small change, but prior to having this built in, there was no real home for our garbage can.  So, I found a sleek (expensive) garbage can and it lived at the end of my island.  Well, at some point, a very honest friend told me my garbage can was the first thing she noticed about my kitchen. (YUCK!).  So, that spurred me on to find this.

It took my handyman about an hour to install and now you can not even tell it's there. I picked a cabinet between my sink and chopping block so it makes for easy cleanup.  Love it!

Here is a similar one to mine that I found on line.  The key is to find one that mounts to the bottom of the cabinet (as opposed to the sides) to prevent having to find an exact size match to the cabinet you're retro-fitting.

The Knife Strip

My kitchen is very deceiving.  Since it is open to other rooms, people walk in and say, "You're kitchen is huge!"  But, if you really look at the space, I don't have a ton of cabinetry.  In fact, I have only six drawers in the entire space.  I also don't have a lot of counter space, so this knife strip was the perfect solution for storing my knives.  I also keep a pair of utility scissors on the end of the strip for easy access by my children.  They know exactly where to look if they need help opening something.

Here is an on line option I found that's similar to mine.

The Sweep Vacuum

This feature was in the house when we moved in, and it's so convenient.  Never would I choose to put in a central vacuum system, if I were building a home.  But this little feature I might consider including.

There is a small "slot" at floor level on the end of my island that you operate by pushing a lever with your foot.  This opens the slot and the vacuum begins.   You simply sweep the dirt, crumbs, etc into the slot.  This is part of the central vacuum system which is housed in our garage and periodically you do have to change out the filter bags in the system (just as you would with a regular vacuum).  It makes clean up quick and easy after preparing a meal or eating a snack.

The Refrigerator

We have a subzero refrigerator that was here when we moved in.  Many people have told me they don't like this style of frig since it is very shallow.  But that is the exact feature that I like about it.  It is wider than a standard frig, but very shallow.  I love being able to see everything in there when I open the door.  No more finding leftovers weeks later that got shoved to the back!

My Griddle

We have a Jenna Air cook top with four burners and a side bar for different attachments.  When we moved in, there was a grill attachment.  I used it one time and realized that the clean up of that thing was not worth it.  So, it sat useless for three years.  Then I happened upon the owner's manual for the cook top which showed tons of different attachments, including a griddle.  I ordered it (I think it was $89) and I use it at least three times a week.  It makes the best pancakes and french toast (you can make six at a time)!  Also, quick clean up.  If you don't have options for attachments to your stove top, consider a griddle pan like the one below (you can stick it in the dishwasher when you finish).

Wooden Chopping Block

I don't think I could live without a chopping block.  I only use this wooden one for vegetable prep (I have a smaller dishwasher safe one that I use for meat) and other cooked items.  I like to put out cheese and crackers (for a pre-dinner nibble) on it when we have friends over for dinner.

So, that's my list of seven.  I would love to hear about your favorites kitchen features! Have a great weekend. M.

Elizabeth Dinkel

I've recently been pre-occupied with Elizabeth Dinkel's designs.  I love how fresh each of her rooms feel - I would describe them as "a very sophisticated version of Spring."  The fabrics and furnishings are so pulled together in every single space.

This room is a nice mix of traditional and modern furnishings and fabrics.  Notice the alcove/sunroom area off this living room.  She's carried the draperies into this space to give it a cohesive feel.  Also, I adore the slender oval side table next to the club chair - very Mad Men.

This is a cheery room - makes me happy just to look at it.  I love the chest under the TV with the same burnt orange accents which play off the drapery panels.  And would you look at the large panes of glass in those french doors.  Perfection.

I am such a sucker for a chevron pattern.  She has sprinkled it throughout the room with pillows and the bed coverlet.  I still find that chevrons are difficult to find here in Birmingham.  There a ikats galore, but the chevron pattern, not so much.

Love how she has placed the club chairs a bit in front of the windows and then given you some pop with that huge mirror between them.  Tons of impact.

OK, sheer bliss.  I think the design of this headboard is spot on and it simply jumps off the page with that wallpaper behind it.  Not sure I would ever get out of bed if this were mine.

This is the perfect room for transitioning a child into their teen room.  I love the subtle colors (not like all that hot pink or teal screaming at you - I'm not judging I have a child that is screaming for teal at this very moment!)

There is a lot of pattern going on in this sitting area, but it works.  The neutral tones of the wallpaper and rug help pull it off.  When you pair these tones with pops of color (like the orange in the chair and the tables) you really get something special.

Weekend Highlights (Random Stuff)

We took a quick trip to my parents' house in Mississippi over the weekend.  It was such a nice little get-a-way, and the weather was absolutely beautiful.  In fact, I noticed trees with tons of buds on them.  It felt like Spring.  Hopefully, we have seen the last of the bitter cold weather here in the South (OK, I hear the laughter from those of you who actually have "bitter" weather!)

Here are few things we did while at my parents.  We ate (a lot)!  Nothing like some home cooking!  It's such a treat to have someone else cook for you, and my Mom is an excellent cook.  She treated us to pulled pork BBQ sandwiches for one meal and the last night we had a divine venison roast with vegetables and rice.  It was delicious!

Also, I took a little trip to my parents' attic and guess what I found?!

You guessed it . . . some brass!  I knew there would be something interesting up there.  (I decided to take my own advice and take a look)
I am sure that once I get candles for these, they will have to live somewhere else since the TV viewing will be blocked, but at least you get an idea as to my find.

Also, my uncle stopped by with these beautiful green eggs.

I am not sure of the type of chickens he has producing these, but the eggs are really impressive.  They are organic and make the best omelets on the planet! I brought a dozen back with me to Birmingham.

I also did a little shopping and picked up this makeup I've been dying to try.  It's a tinted moisturizer (rather than a base).  It starts out a creamy greenish/blue (looks like any ordinary moisturizer) and then tints to the perfect tone for your skin!  I have no idea how it does this, but it works.  Here's the product.

I am sure many manufacturers have this product in their line, so you should definitely check into your favorites for something similar.  I love that it's so light and does not cake into the fine lines around my eyes and mouth (yes, I have fine lines).  It will definitely be my "go to" makeup for the summer since it almost looks as if you are not wearing anything.  It also has an 15 SPF in it for sun protection.  Love it!

Hope your week is off to a great start.  M.

Monday (sort of)

We were out of town for President's day, so today really feels like Monday to me.  The only bright side is Friday will be here sooner than usual!

This is on my mind today.

With all this warm weather, I am thinking about the garden.  I would love to have a couple of these garden obelisks in our vegetable garden this year.

They are a wonderful solution if you live in the city with little space for a garden.  Also, if your garden is visible from the street these obelisks will give an interesting look and turn an eye sore into a focal point.

If any of you have a great source for these, I am all ears!!

What's on your mind today? M.

Post Valentine Glow

I couldn't resist showing you what my sweet husband brought home to me on Monday night.  I arranged them in this urn we got for our wedding years ago.

I love the coral color with the green and white.  Usually he picks tulips or peonies (which are my all time favorites), but he said he thought I needed roses this year.  Too sweet!

They are still fresh three days later!  I hope you had a wonderful day on Monday; and if not, treat yourself to some flowers!  M.

Here are a few parties I am linking to at the moment.  Enjoy your weekend.

Redesign

I think so many people underestimate the impact of re-arranging their furnishings.  By using what you have in new and different ways you can really freshen up a space.

This week, my business partner and I did a redesign for a wonderful homeowner who calls us every season to "freshen up" her spaces.  We move furnishings around and rotate/edit accessories depending on the season.  Here are some pictures of the results!  Thanks Sherry for continuing to call us.  We love working with all your beautiful accessories.

If you live in Birmingham, AL and want a fresh new look for Spring, call us!  We can do the same thing for you.  M.
