Present for the Mr.

The one thing that my husband does not like about our house is the fact that it does not have a dedicated office for him to use when he's home.  So, if I had unlimited funds, this is what I would give him for Christmas this year.

Will you look at those floors? I love the color, shine and the fact they are on the diagonal.  Also, an entire room just for books (with a small sitting area in there)!
Then the work areas and storage.  Soak it in. . .   Sigh.  OK, I admit this gift would be very self indulgent.

PS: The coffee table I turned into an ottoman [which I posted about a while back] is being featured today by Roeshel on The DIY Showoff.  Click on over and check out her blog.  She's got some really amazing DIY projects (in case you have some extra time on your hands this weekend). Thanks, Roeshel, for the mention!

Collections

Most people at some point in their lives have a collection.  While the item collected can be anything under the sun, the way the owner chooses to display the collection can really make or break the look of a room.  It's always important to look at any collection with a discerning eye.

Make sure that you absolutely love each and every object in the collection.  If you don't, it should be given away.  This allows the collection to be a true reflection of your taste and not an assortment of gifts or trinkets someone else has selected for you.

Recently, I posted on subconscious tendencies to collect certain items.  But, as I mentioned then, a collection is all together different.  This is a conscious decision to seek out certain items to include in your space.  Here are some examples.

This is a small collection of Blue and White in my living room.   In my opinion, a little Blue and White goes a long way. So, I have chosen to keep it small.

My second collection is of crosses and it's in my family room.  A friend gave me a cross one year for Christmas and then I received another and before I knew it I had lots of crosses.  So, I decided to hang them all together in a collection.

I took this picture during a re-design we did for a client in Crestline which is an area of Mountain Brook, Alabama. We grouped her collection of paper weights for impact.

This collection works for two reasons.  It is an unusual material (I think it's alabaster) and the shelving creates a great element in the space.

I love the fact there are only a few boxes in this collection, but by grouping them together, you get impact.

You also get impact when the items collected happen to be the same color.
Here are several examples.

I think I would like this collection so much more, if the homeowner had painted the bookshelves a medium grey or a pretty greenish-blue.  The lack of contrast leaves me underwhelmed.

Even brown works for adding impact when you have a number of items in the collection.

Sometimes the items collected are really what makes the collection interesting.  It is a difficult to see, but this is a collection of minis (you know those small liquor bottles you get on planes).  Also, the homeowner has gone to great lengths with custom shelving to display them.

In this case, it's match books, possibly from the homeowner's travels.

The oddity of an object can make it an interesting collection.

Also, a collection can be of only a few prized items.

It can be items that simply bring you joy.

Items that remind you of a favorite hobby.

Or, items that are practical and actually useful.

There are so many items that are collectible.  Consider one of your own and showcase it in a wonderful way in your home.

Nightmare - maybe Terror

OK - it's painfully obvious that I spend way too much time sourcing products on line.
I had a dream over the weekend that I was meeting with a client for the first time, and they pulled out this chandelier.  The husband said, "We want you to decorate our entire family room around this chandelier."  The wife chimed in, "We don't want the room to look themed, just elegant and understated."

I woke up in a cold sweat!

Good Morning!

The Room is the View.
Talk about a morning room - coffee anyone?

I love the long sofa pillow together with the danish modern cocktail table. And did I mention the moldings in the space?!

Here's a closer look.

All that yumminess in one space.  I dare say my mouth is watering.

I hope you had a wonderful weekend, including that extra hour on Sunday!  This week I'm finishing up some beautiful pillows for one of our design jobs.  Don't worry, I am taking lots of pictures to show you later this week!

Friday Finds

Here are a few Friday finds I thought were worth mentioning!  These are Craig's List finds around the Birmingham, Alabama.  But, I am confident you can find similar deals in your area if you just search and keep an open mind to alternative uses when you find a piece at the right price.

Small Buffet/Bar Server

This is a great piece that is very versatile and at $99.00 it's a steal of a deal.  The piece is a small buffet server, but you could easily use it as a bed side table in your master or even a bar/server in a den.

If I were going to us this as a bar/server, I would change out the hardware to something bolder.  Maybe this for a traditional look.

Or this for a more modern look.

Vanity/ Child's Desk

This piece is $75.00 (I would offer $50) and then paint the entire piece and add a piece of glass to the top for a hollywood glam look.

Pair of Twin Beds

Here is a basic pair of twin beds for $100.  The lines are curvy and feminine and have tons of potential.  Again, these could be painted any color or you could have pretty slipcovers made (that tie on the sides) and possibly include a monogram.

Here is picture of the slipcover I had in mind.

Armoire/Desk

This armoire is a bit rough; but if you could get it for $100.00 [they are asking $150], you would have a bargain on your hands.  I think this would look great in a bedroom or it could be repurposed as a desk.

I would repaint the entire piece Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige which comes off a bit more caramel than my computer screen is showing.  Then I would add a high gloss lacquer to finish the piece.
Then I would add these long pulls to the front to really bring the piece back to life.

I hope this little shopping excursion has inspired you!  Have a great weekend.

My Thoughts on Chandeliers

I recently found this website through Averill over at  Odi Et Amo.  She did a wonderful post on unexpected websites with great finds.  She mentioned this site as a spot for inexpensive chandeliers, and it did not disappoint.  I took a peek and look what I found.

French Traditional Chandeliers

I simply can not get over these prices.  Also, if you are questioning the quality, you have not looked around lately for fixtures.  Most, unless they are true antiques, have a similar look.

$179.00
http://www.spectrumhome3.com/PurchaseItem.aspx?ChandelierID=32&SpecialTableID=36&Pieces=Chandelier&Name=Wrought%20Iron&sku=A7-C/3033/5&description2=Spectrum

This one looks so similar to my current dining room chandelier, it's scary.
$194.00
http://www.spectrumhome3.com/PurchaseItem.aspx?ChandelierID=977&SpecialTableID=48&Pieces=Chandelier&Name=Country%20French&sku=A83-443/6&description2=Spectrum

I found my chandelier in a local antique shop and paid much more than this for it [suffice it to say, the chandelier was my home purchase for the year].  While mine is a 12 light version, and they have the above fixture in a 12 light version for $327.00 - yes, I said, $327.00.

But, you be the judge.  Here is a picture of my chandelier - at this very moment I have a metallic taste in my mouth, very bitter flavor.

Also, if you like the silicone dipped bulbs that look like a flame in my chandelier, I have a source for these, just email me! They are a great option if you don't want to do shades.

Here is a comparable fixture from one of my favorite sites that is usually known for pretty good deals.  It has, at present, been blown out of the water.

$1,650.00 (12 light version)

This one is a bit more "drippy" with crystals, but if you like that kind of thing, the price is right!
Modern Glam

I don't have a comparable for this one, but I love the look of it.  It has a "hollywood regency meets pagoda" vibe.
$99.00 (under $100.00 !!)
http://www.spectrumhome3.com/PurchaseItem.aspx?ChandelierID=120879&SpecialTableID=69&Pieces=&Name=Empire%20Style&sku=J10-GOLD/742/3&description2=

Another very taste specific look at a great price.
$196.00
http://www.spectrumhome3.com/PurchaseItem.aspx?ChandelierID=45759&SpecialTableID=&Pieces=CHANDELIER&Name=Under%20300&sku=A46-BLACK/3/490/5&description2=A46-BLACK/3/490/5%20Murano%20Venetian%20Style%20JET%20BLACK%20CRYSTAL%20CHANDELIER

Very chic modern fixture that would look great in the right space.
$297.00
http://www.spectrumhome3.com/PurchaseItem.aspx?ChandelierID=46642&SpecialTableID=&Pieces=CHANDELIER&Name=Under%20300&sku=A7-518/11&description2=A7-518/11%20Gallery%20Modern%20/%20Contemporary%2011%20LIGHT%20CRYSTAL%20LIGHTING%20PENDANT

Compared to this one.
$398.00

In fairness, I am not crazy about the wrought iron at the top of this fixture.  It doesn't seem to go with the rest of the fixture.  But this may not be an issue for you, especially for the price.
$249.00
http://www.spectrumhome3.com/PurchaseItem.aspx?ChandelierID=45707&SpecialTableID=&Pieces=CHANDELIER&Name=Under%20300&sku=A9-604/3&description2=A7-604/3%20Country%20French%20CHANDELIER%20Chandeliers,%20Crystal%20Chandelier,%20Crystal%20Chandeliers,%20Lighting

Similar one.
$498.00

Wall Sconces

A pair of these would be so pretty in a powder room on either side of the mirror.  They have a frenchy feel to me.
$54.00
http://www.spectrumhome3.com/PurchaseItem.aspx?ChandelierID=30919&SpecialTableID=70&Pieces=WALL%20SCONCE&Name=Wall%20Sconces&sku=A81-208/2&description2=

I think lighting is one of those items that you can find less expensive options without sacrificing on the overall look of the room.  You just have to do a little work to find the deals!
