The Lamp Experiment

Back in November, I was making a quick pass through Goodwill and saw this brass lamp.  There is a Goodwill store right down the street from one of my favorite fabric stores.  When I have a minute, I like make a quick run through.  Notice I didn't clean up in the garage for this shot (gotta keep it real).  I think I paid $15.00 for it.

I had been looking for a brass lamp to try out this product - Rub N Buff on to give it that antiqued brass look for less.

I saw a couple of great posts, one by Andea of Oak Ridge Revival and the other by Centsational Girl using this product with amazing results.  One post used Grecian Gold and the other used Antique Gold, so I grabbed both.

My first step was to get rid of the less than attractive color of the base.

I taped off the brass and used the primer and paint I had left over from my shutter project.

I did this back in January and got busy with other projects and totally forgot about it.  My very neat husband (smile here) put the lamp in the attic - so out of sight out of mind.  Then last weekend I was up there rummaging through to find our beach bag and saw it.  I brought it back down and got busy on the "antiquing" phase of the project.

I first tried the Antique Gold - did not work.  It made it look like copper.  Then I tried the Grecian gold - not the look I was going for.  It made it even more brassy than the original.  Lastly, I tried a combination of the two.  All three attempts were a total bust.  They looked like a bad faux finish.  The reason I'm telling you all this is so you will know that DIY projects don't always work out like you plan.  It's trial and error, and least you think I've got it all figured out!  After re-reading every post I could get my hands on about rub n buff, I finally came to the conclusion that it really works best on smaller areas that are more ornate and include details for a patina to form or in the hands of someone who is better at applying it than me!  My lamp is super smooth - so it was impossible for me to get the finish I wanted - thus the bad faux finish effect.

So, I went back to the drawing board on how to "antique" the brass.  After a bit of blogland research, I discovered my lamp was solid brass.  You can figure this out using a magnet.  If the magnet sticks to the lamp, it is brass plated.  If not, it's solid brass.

Why is this important you ask?  Well, if your lamp is plated, you have to be very careful which technique you use to age or tarnish the brass, as you could totally strip away the brass finish.  Now, this may sound like a bummer, but you can still get some pretty cool results by completely striping the brass.  Like this mercury glass finish . . .  - click here for details on this DIY.

My lamp is solid brass, so I did not have to worry about this.  So, I used paint thinner to remove all the rub n buff from the surface.  Then I used acetone (finger nail polish remover) to remove the lacquer finish.  Lacquer was widely use to preserve the shiny finish of brass - it prevents the brass from tarnishing which is exactly what I want on my lamp.

Then I read about several quick ways to speed up the tarnishing process on brass.  You can wipe it down with a salt water solution or even vinegar (if it's solid brass) or you can use a spray bottle for a more even application.  After reading up on the options,  I decided I would be patient and wait for my lamp to tarnish naturally.  I really don't want a contrived pattern.  I just want that antiqued look.

I purchased a new shade (which I will be discussing in a different post - how to select the right shade), and found a home for the lamp in our breakfast room.

Now, we wait.  I tried to research how long it would take and could not find any details - so we are going to do a little experiment.

I am going to periodically photograph the lamp to see if we are there yet (notice Lottie guarding her toy basket - little dogs have the strangest quirks).

Should be interesting to see how long it takes.  Any predictions? M.

The Unicorn

There are a handful of items always in the back of my mind when I source furnishings for a project.  One such item, the alabaster tulip lamp, has haunted me for years.  Well, this week, I actually found one of my unicorns!  I was shopping with a very stylish client who has an amazing eye for treasures.  We were chatting and turned the corner in a local consignment shop.  Just then, a beam of light shot down as if we were watching a broadway show (ok, just kidding, but we did spot it at the exact same time).

Here's what we saw . . .

It's a vintage brass bar cart and the price?!  $98.00 - I still can hardly believe it.  So, here's the conversation:
Me: Do you see what I see?
Client:  Uh, Yeah?!
Me: What is it doing in here?
Client: Better question, What's the price?
Me(looking at the tag): Is that right?!
Client: What is it?
Me (almost in a whisper): $98!!!! Quick, pull the tag before it gets scooped up.
Client: By who?! We're the only people in here you nut?
Me: I don't care!  Take the tag, hurry before they change their minds!!
Client:  I know I need it.  Should I get it?  Is it the right size?  Do you think it's too brassy?  What do you think?
Me: If you don't get, I will.
Client: Done.

So, we took our little prize, and here is where he now lives (yes, this was our quick attempt at styling it before we ran off to grab some lunch).  Hopefully, you get the idea.  If you're not into cocktails, non-alcoholic offerings would also look fantastic served from this little spot.  Or, you could even use it to show off some beautiful desserts.

And just for fun, here are a few more inspirational examples . . .

This fabulous roundup of carts is from Ash of A Dash Of Ash.  Very fun!

I love the contrast of the very traditional artwork and the funky chandelier in brass coupled with the silver bar cart and accessories - very unexpected.

Love it as a side table.

Perfect in this little spot.

As you begin your weekend, my wish for you is that you find your own unicorns (whatever they may be).  Enjoy your time off!!! M.

Weekend Highlights (Random Stuff)

We took a quick trip to my parents' house in Mississippi over the weekend.  It was such a nice little get-a-way, and the weather was absolutely beautiful.  In fact, I noticed trees with tons of buds on them.  It felt like Spring.  Hopefully, we have seen the last of the bitter cold weather here in the South (OK, I hear the laughter from those of you who actually have "bitter" weather!)

Here are few things we did while at my parents.  We ate (a lot)!  Nothing like some home cooking!  It's such a treat to have someone else cook for you, and my Mom is an excellent cook.  She treated us to pulled pork BBQ sandwiches for one meal and the last night we had a divine venison roast with vegetables and rice.  It was delicious!

Also, I took a little trip to my parents' attic and guess what I found?!

You guessed it . . . some brass!  I knew there would be something interesting up there.  (I decided to take my own advice and take a look)
I am sure that once I get candles for these, they will have to live somewhere else since the TV viewing will be blocked, but at least you get an idea as to my find.

Also, my uncle stopped by with these beautiful green eggs.

I am not sure of the type of chickens he has producing these, but the eggs are really impressive.  They are organic and make the best omelets on the planet! I brought a dozen back with me to Birmingham.

I also did a little shopping and picked up this makeup I've been dying to try.  It's a tinted moisturizer (rather than a base).  It starts out a creamy greenish/blue (looks like any ordinary moisturizer) and then tints to the perfect tone for your skin!  I have no idea how it does this, but it works.  Here's the product.

I am sure many manufacturers have this product in their line, so you should definitely check into your favorites for something similar.  I love that it's so light and does not cake into the fine lines around my eyes and mouth (yes, I have fine lines).  It will definitely be my "go to" makeup for the summer since it almost looks as if you are not wearing anything.  It also has an 15 SPF in it for sun protection.  Love it!

Hope your week is off to a great start.  M.

Brass is Back!

I know what you're thinking, "I just managed to get rid of all my brass bathroom fixtures, cabinet hardware and door knobs and now it's back?!"  Oh yeah.  Brass is back, but with a bit of a twist.  The current look has an antiqued finish which means no polishing!  The un-lacquered version of brass will patina into the antiqued finish that is currently the hot look.  Also, it doesn't take a ton of brass to get this look.  Small accents are really all you need.

Here's what I mean.

So, now your thinking, "Where do I get this kind of brass and how do I incorporate it into my space in an affordable way?"  Here are a few ideas.

Dig, Beg, Borrow

First, go to your attic, your parent's attic, or even a willing friend's attic (who doesn't know that brass is back and thinks you're crazy) and find some brass somethings.  If the brass you find has a lacquered finish (meaning it is very shiny), take off the lacquer.  Here's a step by step guide to help you do this.  Then let the pieces patina into the antique brass.

Garage & Yard Sale Outings

Right now, you can still find brass at almost every yard sale or Goodwill location.  But, once it catches on, you will not be able to find an affordable brass anything!  So, grab a friend and go to a few sales early Saturday morning.

Shop On Line

If you're too busy to dig or hunt, then just go on line.  Obviously, Ebay, Craig's List and even Etsy are options for finding antiqued brass.  But if you still need some inspiration, here are a few affordable accessories that I found for you!  These can easily be grouped on a side table or placed on a coffee table for major impact.  Enjoy!
